Belconnen
Belconnen was the second Canberra satellite town to be developed, with the first residents moving into the suburb of Aranda in 1967. The area is to the north-west of the city centre, separated from it by a high ridge on the east, dominated by Black Mountain and its tower. Commuting in and around Belconnen is easy, with the well planned major roads and public transport providing a quick trip in to the city.
Belconnen's town centre is a major employment area and is home to a Westfield shopping mall, an industrial area and fresh produce markets. The Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra Stadium (home of the Raiders and Brumbies football teams), Calvary Public and Private Hospitals, cinemas, a library, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and dozens of eateries are also located in the vicinity.
Lake Ginninderra is adjacent to Belconnen mall and the surrounding John Knight Memorial Park is a popular venue for picnics, walks or early morning jogs. Other outdoor pursuits in the area include Ginninderra Falls and golf courses.
Many pre, primary and secondary schools are scattered throughout the suburbs, both government and private including the well respected Radford College. Belconnen is also home to the nationally recognised University of Canberra.
